How pairs cricket scoring adds up
Every team starts on the same score, 200 in most of the rule books linked below. Runs off the bat and extras are added; each time a batter is out the wicket runs come off, but the pair bats on until its overs are done. The final score is start + runs - wickets x penalty.
Example: Ashford score 100 runs and lose 7 wickets, so 200 + 100 - 35 = 265. Brook Green score 79 and also lose 7: 200 + 79 - 35 = 244. Ashford win by 21 runs. Open this match in the scorer to see every over, pair and bowler, or print its score sheet.
Tap a run button for each ball. Wides, no balls, byes and leg byes ask how many runs went with them. Out asks how, and who, for a run out. The strike changes on odd runs, at the end of each over and after a wicket, following the format's rule on who faces after a run out. Tap any ball in the over list to fix it later.
Formats you can pick
Rules differ by county and age group, so each format in the list follows a published rule set or score sheet: the county 8-a-side 16 over game, ECB Kwik Cricket, the ECB under 9 format, Herts 100-ball and 10-a-side, Middlesex under 10, Greater Manchester under 9 and the North West soft ball sheet. Change any number to match your league.
Score sheets by team size: 6-a-side · 8-a-side · 10-a-side · 12-a-side. All the rules side by side: pairs cricket rules.
Questions
How does scoring work in pairs cricket?
Each team starts on a set score, such as 200. Every run is added and every time a batter is out a set number of runs come off (5 in seven of the eight formats here), but the batter stays in. Both teams bat all their overs, so the higher final score wins.
What happens when a batter is out in pairs cricket?
They stay in. The runs per wicket come off the total and the batter who is out does not face the next ball. Greater Manchester under 9s differ after a run out: the striker goes to the non-striker's end whoever was out, so a non-striker who is run out faces next.
How many overs does each pair bat?
It depends on the format. The Suffolk and Wiltshire 8-a-side sheets have four overs a pair (16 overs), ECB Kwik Cricket two, the ECB under 9 format four, and Herts 100-ball games five overs of five balls.
Are wides and no balls re-bowled?
Under the ECB, Kwik Cricket and Middlesex rules a wide or no ball scores 2 and is not bowled again, except in the last over. Herts never re-bowls them; Greater Manchester under 9s score 1 and re-bowl. Set yours under Wides, no balls and bowling.
Who wins if the scores are level?
In Herts leagues it is a tie. Middlesex junior rules give it to the side that took more wickets, then to the side ahead after 19 overs, 18 and so on, then to a bowl-out. The scorer works this out when you pick the Middlesex rule under Level scores.
Does the score survive if my phone locks or the page closes?
Yes. Every ball is saved on your phone as you tap it, so a locked screen, a reload or a closed tab all come back to the same ball. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I print a blank pairs cricket score sheet?
Yes. Pick the format, then press Print blank sheet. You get one page per team with a box for every over, bowler names, running totals, extras and the result.
